With a mother as pianist, a father as trombonist and sister as refined violinist, Jackie Perkins (Sparta, North Carolina, 1963) was born under the star sign of music. At nine years of age she began playing the piano, the guitar at eleven and the viola at twelve. At eighteen she enrolled at university and began studying lyric opera, subsequently graduating in music and Italian. A Rotary scholarship brought her to Italy: first to Siena, then to Rome where she studied opera, Perugia and finally Parma, where she has been living since 1995. In the Emilian city she settled into a little apartment near the Boito Conservatory of Music, picked up the guitar after a long absence and began writing. The following year the concerts began: her, the guitar, her initial shyness and her first songs inspired by Joni Mitchell. She recorded “Go Forth Living Arrows” which would officially come out in 2000.
Soon afterwards she began broadening her musical horizons: she took up jazz, she continued her involvement in the classical world and she succumbed to the temptations of disco and pop-dance music. From 1997 to the present she has sung on over 20 records including singles, compilations and collections. She has continued giving concerts throughout Italy alone and in various group formations. In 1998 she completed her first album “The Other Side of French Radio” which has remained unpublished. In 1999 she recorded the vocal tracks for “I am at the village” composed by Elio Baldicantù. In the following years she participated as singer and acoustic guitarist in tours with the guitarist Paolo Giordano (past collaborations include Lucio Dalla and Biagio Antonacci) and the internationally acclaimed bassist Michael Manring. Together they completed Giordano’s first solo album “Kid in a Toyshop” which came out in 2000 under the independent label Step Musique. In more recent years she has continued giving live performances in Italy and the United States where she has met with widespread critical acclaim and success in the circuit of new acoustic music, refining her compositions and live performances through her particular style of guitar playing in which she uses open tunings and original rhythms, harmoniously combined with a splendid voice spanning a wide range. In 2007 she participated in the project “Have You Seen the Roses”, Paolo Giordano’s third solo record with unusual and captivating arrangements of songs by Syd Barrett, the late ingenious founder of Pink Floyd. Jackie sang all the vocal tracks superbly, contributing to the successful release of the CD.
In 2008 she began intensive work on “The Still Awakening”, solo CD featuring her own compositions that was released in March 2009. Besides the ever extraordinary and evolutionary Michael Manring on bass, it features other international musicians such as Alex Acuña (Weather Report), Adriano Molinari (Zucchero) and brothers Paul and Gabin Dabirè, two Africans from Burkina Faso, giving life to a multi-ethnic project.
In the spring of 2009 she went on tour in Italy with the formation “Exotique Band”, with the participation of Manring, the Dabiré brothers and Massimo Varini on acoustic and electric guitar. In 2011 she sang lead vocals in “Christmas Paradise Brazilian Love Affair” with pieces arranged by Elio Baldicantù. In 2012 she became the first female American songwriter to participate IFSGF in Shanghai, China, invited by Naga Guitars of Huang Chia-Wei, and opened the concert for Tommy Emmanuel at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre. In February of 2014 she shared the stage with Alessandro Finazzo (Finaz) of the band Bandabardò touring with Michael Manring.
In the spring of 2015 she toured in various Italian cities again with beloved collaborator Manring and British guitarist Clive Carroll. She sang in a jazz trio with Elio and Tommaso Baldicantù (piano, double bass) in the project “Songs for Freedom,” which they presented in two concerts in September 2014 and March 2015. The concerts featured songs on the theme of freedom, arranged by Baldicantù. She produced a video with Paolo Schianchi in June 2016 at his “Omniamusica Recording Studio”.
From 1999 to 2014 she attended the acoustic guitar festival “Acoustic Guitar Meeting” in Sarzana, as both beloved and highly requested performer, but also as a presenter of the evening concerts and translator in seminars and workshops. She participated in the first edition of the Acoustic Guitar Village in Cremona Mondomusica in September 2014 and again in 2019.
In 2021 she sang vocals on Jaime Dolce’s album “Love Generator”, accompanying him in concerts throughout Italy in 2022.
In 2017, 2019 and 2023 she participated in tours with Italo-American singer Giulia Millanta, opening concerts and singing harmonies on her songs in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium.
From 2017 to 2023 she has performed a series of Joni Mitchell tribute concerts in celebration of the 50th anniversary release of Mitchell’s first album, accompanied by saxophonist Max Trapani.

Con una madre pianista, il padre suonatore di trombone, la sorella raffinata violinista, Jackie Perkins (Sparta, South Carolina, 1963) nasce sotto il segno della musica. Già a nove anni inizia a suonare il piano, a undici la chitarra, l’anno dopo la viola. A diciott’anni s’iscrive all’università e inizia a cantare, fino alla doppia laurea in lingue e musica. Una borsa di studio della Rotary Foundation la porta in Italia: prima a Siena, poi a Roma dove studia lirica, poi a Perugia, e infine a Parma, dove vive dal 1995. Nella città emiliana trova un piccolo appartamento vicino al Conservatorio “Boito”, riprende in mano la chitarra e inizia a scrivere. L’anno dopo arrivano i primi concerti, lei, una chitarra, l’iniziale timidezza e le prime ballate folk ispirate a Joni Mitchell. Registra “Go Forth Living Arrows”, che uscirà solo nel 2000.
Presto allarga i suoi orizzonti musicali: si appassiona al jazz, si mette alla prova nella classica, si lascia tentare dalla disco e dalla pop-dance. Dal ’97 ad oggi collabora alla realizzazione di più di venti dischi tra single, compilation e raccolte. Continua a tenere concerti un po’ in tutta Italia, da sola e in gruppo. Nel ’98 completa il suo primo album, “The Other Side of French Radio”, ancora inedito. Del ’99 sono invece le sonorità jazz di “I am at the village” composto da Elio Baldicantù.
Negli anni seguenti partecipa, come voce e chitarra acustica, in tour con il chitarrista Paolo Giordano (alle spalle collaborazioni con Lucio Dalla e Biagio Antonacci) e il bassista di fama internazionale Michael Manring. Produce un video con Paolo Schianchi nel giugno del 2016 nel suo “Omniamusica Recording Studio”.
Dal 1999 al 2014 partecipa al prestigioso festival della chitarra acustica “Acoustic Guitar Meeting” a Sarzana, come richiesta ed amata performer, ma anche come presentatrice dei concerti serali e traduttrice nei seminari e workshop. Ha partecipato alla prima edizione del Acoustic Guitar Village a Cremona Mondomusica nel settembre 2016, e ancora nel 2019.
